ImageSome 272 applicants were hired on the spot as they joined the Labor Day Jobapalooza 2009 or Jobs Fair at the Amusement and Events Center, Provincial Capitol Compound here last May 1.

However, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) provincial director Virginia L. Bonbon said that the applicants hired were much less than the 1,550 job vacancies brought along by the seven participating overseas employment agencies and four local companies in Pagadian City.

Bonbon said majority of the job vacancies were domestic helpers besides skilled workers but only few have applied.  In fact, there were 508 who filled up the attendance sheets participated in the Labor Day celebration, but only 221 have registered as applicants for jobs overseas and 68 were after for local employment.

The provincial employment officer also clarified that out of the 221 only 204 were pre-screened for job matching abroad and practically were hired on the spot.  The remaining 17 were advised to come back by June 12 for another Jobs Fair during the Independence Day celebration to be held in the same venue.

While there were seven overseas employment agencies and four local companies looking for workers that participated in the Jobapalooza, the Provincial Government’s Phil-jobnet e-center was also brought over the venue of the activity.

ImageIn fact, Bonbon said, there were 40 applicants who registered at the Phil-jobnet for job-matching and possible employment.

The Phil-Jobnet e-center is Cerilles Administration’s initiative to help constituents finding appropriate jobs matched to their profession, knowledge and skills through the internet.  DOLE Assistant Secretary Teresita Trasmonte officially launched it last January 17, 2009.

Meanwhile, as Labor Day celebration was in the offing, the Provincial Government took the cudgel to sponsor the Jobapalooza ‘09 through its Public Employment Service Office (PESO) in cooperation with DOLE to speed up employment assistance to workers affected by the global financial crisis (GFC).

Governor Aurora E. Cerilles, as host of the affair, welcomed the participants, saying: “Kini nga kalihokan nag-ila sa dakung panginahanglan sa hiniusang paglihok ug pagtinabangay sa usa’g-usa aron sa pagkunhod sa epekto sa kalibutanong krisis ngadto sa mga trabahador ug sa atong ekonomiya.”

She then commended Verde International Manpower Services, Pacific Mediterranean Int’l. Management and Service, Non-Stop Overseas Employment Corp, JRT Magica Int’l. Placement and General Services Corp.

Likewise to  Rural Transit Mindanao, Inc., M. Lhuillier Pawnshop, Inc., Taytay sa Kauswagan and CRT Computer Arts as local companies hiring for additional manpower.

ImageShe was also glad for the involvement of three livelihood organizations that showcased their products such as: Zamboanga del Sur Women Zero Waste Recycling Movement; Ramon Magsaysay Bamboo Craft Association and Dumingag Federated Women’s Association.

First District representative Victor Yu also graced the activity.  Director Albert Valenciano, head of the Administration and Management of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) along with his regional counterparts.

PESO provincial manager Tyrone Singgo and PESO regional federated president Joseph Isaias Quipot VI served as the frontliners for the said activity. (Remai S. Alejado/Zambosur Press Bureau)
