Pagadian City – At least 20 workers from marginalized informal sector in the city were very grateful to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Provincial Office for awarding them with Starter KITS Project recently.

Fruit vendor Michael Bajao, 25 yrs old of barangay Dao, heartily thanked the DOLE because he is one of the lucky recipients of the Nego-Kart project.

“I am very happy that I received the Nego-Kart because this project will certainly help me improve my livelihood,” Baja said in a local dialect.

“I expressed my gratitude to the DOLE officials especially to Regional Director Ponciano Ligutom and Provincial Director Virginia Bonbon because they have included us, ambulant vendors, as the recipients of Nego-Kart,” Bajao further said. “I can really vouch on their logo which contained the phrase, ‘more than jobs’ because we marginalized workers are given the opportunity plan, set up, start and operate our livelihood undertakings in an easy to learn manner by just using our skills,” he added.

Bajao is selling fruits in Agora for two years but is not satisfied of his earning because a bigger chunk of it goes to cart rental. With the Nego-Kart that he owned now, he firmly believes his income will increase.

The 52 yr. old beautician, Imelda Teledorio of Barangay Sta. Lucia shared the same feelings as a recipient of the starter kit.

“I am both happy and excited because the DOLE answered my needs, and everyday is Christmas to me,” Telderio said.

“I can’t afford to buy these beauty tools and equipment for these are very expensive. With the help of DOLE, I can start again my home service,” Teledorio said.

Teledorio worked as home service beautician for about 4 yrs now. She promised to share her skills in hair rebonding for free to those who are interested to learn. She said she intends to do this as a gesture of her thankfulness to the government.

A total cost of P200,00 of DOLE Kabuhayan (DK) Starter KITS Project was earmarked in the first batch of beneficiaries, where the P150,000 are for Nego-Kart and 50,000 for the starter kits project. It can be recalled that the said project was spearheaded by Labor Undersecretary Lourdes M. Trasmonte which aims to identify some 200 beneficiaries from the informal sector per region, or a total of 3,200 in 16 regions, along with 3,000 OFW returnees and their families. The project aims to give the beneficiaries the chance to quickly start their livelihood undertakings and to become productive self-employed citizens. (GCC/PIA9-Pagadian City)
