Pagadian City - Around 1200 children aging 10 years old and above are expected to be circumcised by the end of the week as City Government and Sangguniang Kabataan Federation launches “Operation Tuli.” Dubbed as Operasyon Kulturang Pinoy, “Operation Tuli,” which is scheduled on April 21-25, 2008 is a joint project of City Mayor Sammy Co and SK Federated President Hon. Fausto “Buddy” Lingating III. City Health Medical Officer Dr. Referino A. Lingating and 20 nurses team up to circumcise pre-registered children in 54 barangays that is clustered into 5 venues. SK Officers join hands on the activity. Organizers anticipate 300 children will be circumcised in Brgy. Balangasan (scheduled April 21), 150 in Brgy, Macasing (April 22), 150 in Brgy. Danlugan (April 23), 300 in Brgy. Tiguma (April 24) and 300 in Brgy. San Francisco (April 25). It was learned that a minimal fee of P100 is collected from each patient to defray cost of medicines that will be given to the circumcised children. In public and private hospitals, tuli would normally cost P500 to P1500 per surgery. Various sectors commend Operation Tuli as parents can avail of the program to save money. In Biblical times, circumcision was regarded as religious rite; but modern medicine considers circumcision as part of personal hygiene for men.
